Dr. Alia I. Abdelmoty

Dr. Alia I. Abdelmoty is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Informatics, Cardiff University, Wales, UK. She received her PhD in Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (1995) and joined Cardiff University in 2000.

Her research focuses on how people perceive and interact with places, developing qualitative approaches to spatial modelling, and building intelligent systems that understand geographic and social contexts. She leads a research group within the School's AI Section, currently supervising six PhD students working on place-based knowledge graphs, geographic question answering, and mental health ontologies.

Dr. Abdelmoty has supervised 11 PhD students and 1 MPhil to completion, with graduates progressing to academic positions in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UK, and senior roles at organisations including Meta, Jisc, and government agencies. She has published over 80 papers in leading journals and conferences including International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Knowledge-Based Systems, and ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information.

She serves as Guest Editor for Future Internet (MDPI) and reviews for major journals including International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Journal of Spatial Information Science, and Journal of Location Based Services. She has examined PhD theses at institutions including the University of Manchester, The Open University, and RMIT University Australia, and has served as external evaluator for professorial promotion applications at international institutions.
